From 2013-2019, police officers in Washington State were responsible for the death of 25 Black persons. This poster lists the names and memorial images of these persons in order to raise awareness of police violence against Black persons within our own state. They were parents, teens, athletes, and community members. Some of these names you may know; others you may not. We ask that you raise awareness of all instances of Black persons death in the hands of Washington state PD by sharing this image and by saying their names.

We have included some data from 2020. However, cases of police violence and information about fatal incidents involving police often take a long time to come to light. Vital information, such as the race or ethnicity of the person who died as a result of the incident, is not always publicly available until a long time after the event itself took place. Because the information comes out so slowly, we have done the best we can to collect known Black persons who have died as a result of interactions with the police in Washington state, but know that there are likely other incidents not represented in this image.

This image was made in response to a local POC who critiqued the Seattle protests happening in response to George Floyd’s death. They were upset that the crowds were chanting the names of non-local victims where there is police violence right here in Washington state that often goes unacknowledged. They were pleading with the crowd to get to know the Black persons here who have died due to police interactions. We hope that this image makes that task easier and helps localize this nation-wide problem.

The 2013-2019 names were collected from https://mappingpoliceviolence.com with images pulled from news articles about the incidents. The 2020 data was crowdsourced via social media and links to local news sources. All images were collected through Google searches for the victims and information about them. Some images could not be found or confirmed and are so marked. Please contact us immediately if you see an error that needs to be rectified.
